Whether snorted, smoked or injected, meth gives users an intense euphoria due to the release of dopamine, a natural, feel-good chemical contained in your brain. Amphetamines are the most-potent stimulant because they cause the largest release of dopamine, more than three times that of cocaine.

The downside is a different story. The intense pleasure is followed by a crash that often leads users to seek the high again and again, becoming addicted. Over time, many find it difficult or even impossible to feel pleasure naturally.

And local law enforcement officials say that once you’re hooked, you have a 5-percent chance of recovery.
