Remember to never put yourself or an employee or
co-worker, family or friends in harms way. Do not take matters
into your own hands. If you witness suspicious behavior alert
your local law enforcement.
If you are a store employee do not attempt to detain the individual.
Remember as much about the person as possible and keep any
identifying information (ie. Signature, credit card number,
etc.)

Is
there a meth lab cooking in my neighborhood?
12 CLUES
|
1. |
The
mixing of unusual chemicals in a house, garage or
barn by persons not involved in the chemical industry.
|
|
2. |
Possession
of unusual materials such as large amounts of over-the-counter
allergy/cold/diet medications (containing ephedrine
or pseudoephedrine), or large quantities of solvents
such as Acetone, Coleman Fuel, Toluene, etc. |
|
3. |
The
possession of chemical glassware by someone not
involved in the chemical field. |
|
4. |
Unusual
amounts of clear glass containers being brought
into the home. |
|
5. |
Late
night secretive activity in a rural/farm area. Lots
of traffic: People coming and going at unusual times.
There may be little traffic during the day, but
at night the activity increases dramatically. |
|
6. |
Unusual,
strong odors (like cat urine, ether, ammonia, acetone
or other chemicals). |
|
7. |
Residences
with operating fans in windows in cold weather. |
|
8. |
Residences
with windows blacked out. |
|
9. |
Renters
who pay their landlords in cash. (Most drug dealers
trade exclusively in cash.) |
|
10. |
Excessive
trash including large amounts of items such as:
antifreeze containers, lantern fuel cans, red chemically
stained coffee filters, drain cleaner and duct tape.
|
|
11. |
Chemical
odors coming from sheds, outbuildings, other structures,
fields, orchards, campsites, or especially vehicles
(older model cars and pickup trucks, vans and rental/moving
vans) etc. Items are usually kept covered up in
vehicles. |
12. |
Boxes
or drums with corrosive, flammable, poison, or other
“safety” placards. |
WHAT
DO I DO IF I DISCOVER AN ILLEGAL METH LAB?
| 1. |
Remain calm. Give yourself time to think clearly.
|
| 2. |
Immediately
contact your local law enforcement agency. |
| 3. |
Do
NOT approach suspects. They are often armed and
may be dangerous. |
| 4. |
Do NOT approach
the lab area. Discarded containers, waste and other
materials remaining from a meth lab can be highly
toxic and dangerous. Do no try to clean up the area.
Evidence should remain undisturbed for investigation
by law enforcement. |
| 5. |
Keep a safe distance.
Hazardous materials may ignite or the fumes may
overcome you. |
HOW
CAN I KEEP A METH LAB AWAY FROM MY FAMILY AND PROPERTY?
| 1. |
Make sure sheds, barns and other structures have
proper locks and security systems. |
| 2. |
Develop
positive communications with your local law enforcement. |
| 3. |
Participate
in a Farm Watch system or a "good neighbor"
policy with people and operations around you. Keep
an eye out for suspicious traffic in and around
your property, and do the same for your neighbor.
